Inaugural speech by H.E. Dr. Malika Bendouda, Minister of Culture and Arts

SILA, the meeting ground of Social Harmony

The Algiers International Book Fair (SILA) has always reflected the vision of the Algerian State regarding culture and the arts. It is an essential reference for understanding the foundational dimension of culture from the Algerian perspective, as well as a clear expression of the shared citizenship consciousness, as it unfolds in all its components—including the field of popular culture.

This event is, without a doubt, the showcase of the deep-rooted social harmony in Algeria, a place where Algerians, with all their sensitivities and ideas, stroll together and reciprocate countless signs of affection.

Each year, it establishes itself as the nation’s foremost cultural event. It serves as a key indicator of the place the Book occupies in the hearts of Algerians. Millions of citizens converge from the country’s inner regions, driven by the quest for works that shape their thinking or awaken their curiosity.

For us, the act of reading is a gesture of freedom—one that can neither be curtailed nor monitored. It is a civilizing act; regardless of its orientation or genre, it is a process that activates the mind and aspires to wisdom.

When reading becomes a grand celebration at the Algiers International Book Fair, it crowns an entire year of reading promotion and related activities, thanks to the active involvement of book clubs and dedicated cultural promoters: publishers, authors, and booksellers.

The significant contribution of institutions under the Ministry of Culture and the Arts—especially public reading libraries—ensures that through this cognitive synergy, the place of the Book is strengthened year after year.

The Book Fair is not limited to stands that market knowledge, cultures, and stories. It is also enriched by parallel events that explore how literary works are received in different parts of the world.

It serves as a meeting place between writers, creators, and scholars, and the public representing he diversity of orientations, categories, and ideas. Dialogue and discussion around reading, writing, literary production, awards, creative perspectives, and the limits of reception become the spark of the event—allowing the public to rise to the values of knowledge alongside the key actors of the literary world.

We have previously stated, from various platforms, that we consider the Book to be the first threshold of knowledge and the gateway to culture.
We continue to emphasize that no societal renaissance can be achieved outside this unifying cognitive framework.

However, we must remain vigilant and adapt to the evolutions of the publishing world—its transformations and digital challenges—and find the most appropriate ways to enter the new publishing landscape and follow the readership of the new generation.

The Algiers International Book Fair has accustomed its audience to the excellence of its events with each edition.

It brings readers together with outstanding authors, opens its space to new voices, and welcomes creators from all corners of the globe.
For this edition, we celebrate the guest of honor—the sister Republic of Mauritania—its cultural richness , and its fascinating convergences with Algerian culture.

Beyond the warm welcome they deserve, it is our duty to grant the culture of this enchanting country the place it merits, to make known the creations of the Mauritanian people, and to honor them with the dignity they deserve.
We wish the twenty-eighth edition of the Algiers International Book Fair every success.

Under the slogan “The Book, Crossroads of Cultures,” Algeria welcomes the totality of human cultures.
